OPAN Information Services
Older Persons Advocacy Network organisations provide information about aged care service provision and the rights and responsibilities of consumers of Commonwealth funded aged care services, their carers, family members, service providers and members of the public.
Many of the people who seek information from Older Persons Advocacy Network organisations are people who are happy to access services themselves, but want to get their facts straight first.
Information provided by OPAN organisations is:
- independent from aged care service provision
- Free and accessible to people with diverse needs
- available in a range of formats including over the phone, electronic, in print and face to face where required and practical
- respectful of people wishing to remain anonymous
- supportive of informed decision making and self advocacy
- able to connect people seeking further information or support with an advocate.

The information and advocacy support provided by Older Persons Advocacy Network organisations specifically focuses on:
- accessing and interacting with the aged care service system
- the rights and responsibilities of Commonwealth funded aged care consumers
- assisting consumers to raise concerns about the care and services they are receiving.
When requests for information and support are made for issues outside of this scope, Older Persons Advocacy Network organisations have skilled and experienced staff who will draw on an extensive database of networks and resources to ensure an appropriate referral is made wherever possible.

Accessing aged care services
My Aged Care is the main entry point to the aged care system in Australia.

- Make arrangements for an assessment to determine eligibility for Commonwealth funded aged care services
- Offer support to find and access services
- Estimate fees and costs associated with aged care services
- Provide information on a range of topics including fees and charges, financial hardship provisions, residential respite, end of life care and much more.
Aged Care Complaints
You may also choose to formally lodge a complaint about a commonwealth funded aged care service through the Aged Care Complaints Commissioner.

Aged Care Quality
If you are concerned about the quality of care provided by an aged care service, please refer to the purple Aged Care Complaints box above for an appropriate first point of contact.
Below is information on the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency whose role is to:
- accredit Australian Government-subsidised aged care homes
- conduct quality reviews of home care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flexible care services
- provide compliance monitoring, information and training to providers
- work with the community to promote quality care for older Australians.
